ELEGIBILITY

1.                  BCRMTA (Vancouver Branch) Student Performers’ Guild Festival is open to students of members of the BCRMTA and students of members of the BCRMTA – Student Teachers Auxiliary from ALL BRANCHES.

 

FESTIVAL ENTRIES

2.         DEADLINE:  October 4, 2009 Sunday (midnight)

bullet All completed festival entries must be mailed or hand delivered to:

                        1058 West 42nd Ave.,

                        Vancouver, B.C. V6M 2A8               OR

                      Any SPG Festival Committee member as listed.           

bullet NO LATE ENTRIES  are accepted.

3.         Completed Festival entries include:

bulletcompleted Student Entry Form (one form per student)
bulletcompleted Master Accounting Sheet for each teacher
bullet Cheques with full payment accompanying the submitted form. Please make cheques payable to STUDENT PERFORMERS’ GUILD.
bulletPlease include the teacher's email address as the teachers will be the ones contacted by email for any changes or news.

4.         Entries must be on current 2009 Entry Form and all sections must be completed. Extra forms may be photocopied from originals or can be downloaded from the BCRMTA-Vancouver Branch website: Forms.

5.         All forms are to be completed by the teacher and it is the responsibility of the teacher to ensure that all forms are filled correctly in neat handwriting.

6.         FULL PAYMENT must accompany the entries.  Bank charges for NSF cheques will be billed to the entrant.

7.         Entries not conforming to the above rules will be rejected by the SPG Festival Committee. Teachers will be notified and if they wish, the SPG Festival Committee will correct the entries for a fee of $40.00.  If any outstanding charges are not forthcoming within one week after the deadline (October 11, 2009 midnight) to the treasurer, the entry will be withdrawn automatically. Please note that NO CHANGES will be allowed after this final deadline.

8.         Students must perform as scheduled in the program.  Changing of class selections is not permitted under any circumstances after the registration deadline. Students with SPECIAL REQUESTS such as religious or travel restrictions, must state this in advance on the entry form at time of registration.  Teachers are reminded to ensure the entry form is accurately completed for selection, title, composer and   performance time.

CLASS ENTRIES

9.         All classes are either Preliminary (Pre-Grade 1), Junior (Grades 1-4),          Intermediate (Grades 5-8) or Senior (Grades 9-12).  Please go to Piano Classes for the details of each class. 

10.       Unless otherwise stated, all classes are own choice, and one selection only. Pieces may be chosen from any recognized Canadian examination syllabus.  However the Guild Committee will use the 2008 Royal Conservatory of Music Syllabus as a guideline to grading, and where a piece is graded at a different level by another syllabus, the September 2008 RCM grading will take precedence.

EXCEPTION: If the most recent RCM Syllabus/other syllabus require 2 or more selections to be performed as a group, students must perform all the required parts provided it is within the time limit. Any student who performs a selection with more than one part must state this on the entry form with the total performance time given. For selections of more than one part that do not fit the preceding qualifications, please enter under OWN CHOICE.    

11.       Competitive classes will be held at levels 11 and 12.  Level 11 are for students who have passed their Grade 10 Practical Examination and are working towards their ARCT Examination.  Level 12 are for students who have passed their ARCT Examination and still wish to participate in the Festival. 

12.       Students who have passed the Practical Examination of the Royal Conservatory of Music (or equivalent) by the summer (August session) immediately preceding the Festival must proceed to the next grade or higher. 

            EXCEPTION: members of an ensemble group may be one grade above or below the stated level. 

13.       FIRST PLACE winners from the previous Guild Festival are NOT ELIGIBLE to compete again in a class in which they have obtained first place standing.

            EXCEPTION: Open classes. 

14.       Competitors over the age of 23 may enter the festival in the ADULT Category and will be adjudicated but are not eligible for awards or scholarships.  

15.       Non-competitive classes will be held as requested.  Indicate this on the entry form as NC.  ONLY comments are given. 

16.       The Guild Committee reserves the right to reclassify and regrade any non-conforming entry without notification. Copy of any ungraded selection is   required with the application.

17.       The correct length of performance must be stated on the entry form. If in doubt, please use a stop-watch.

PROGRAM PROCEDURE

18.       Teachers must ensure that his/her student(s) know where and when their classes are to be held. Students who miss their class will not be rescheduled. 

19.       An original copy of music must be provided for the adjudicator. PHOTOCOPIES ARE NOT ALLOWED.  EXCEPTION: Out of print music with certification from a recognized music supplier.  Students who forget their music will be given a written adjudication ONLY. 

20.       Music should be presented to the Adjudicator’s Assistant when called with the correct page open. Student’s name and number should be written on the music. All unnecessary markings should be erased.  Music must be marked with measure numbers.           

21.       Students are expected to perform from memory.  Students who play from the score will be given written adjudication but no mark or place. 

EXCEPTION: Chamber ensemble classes. 

22.       TIME LIMITS WILL BE STRICTLY ENFORCED.  The competitor will be   stopped by the Adjudicator’s Assistant if the performance is beyond the allotted time limit.  NO scholarship or award will be given for any incomplete performance. 

23.       The Adjudicator, at his/her discretion, may stop a performance at any time. 

24.       All music, marking sheets and certificates must be collected at the end of the class.  The SPG assumes NO responsibility for music left by competitors. 

25.       Suitable dress and stage deportment is expected and required. 

26.       Competitors, teachers and parents are not permitted to approach or speak to the adjudicator for any reason whatsoever.  Failure to comply with these regulations will result in immediate disqualification.  Any necessary communication may be addressed to the Adjudicator’s Assistant.

AWARDS & SCHOLARSHIPS

27.       Marks and ranks of FIRST, SECOND and THIRD will be given for marks 80% and over.  Written and oral adjudication will be given after each class.  The first place winner in all classes will be announced by the adjudicator. 

28.       A mark of 88% or better is required to qualify for a trophy. 

29.       To qualify for a Student Performers’ Guild Scholarship the student must:

bulletbe studying with a member of BCRMTA in good standing  
bulletenter three competitive solo classes (not including Concerto) (entry in the Concert Group class constitutes one solo entry)
bullet Senior Division Only:    to perform either a work by J.S. Bach or a major Sonata i.e. Schubert, Mozart, Beethoven or Haydn.
bullet A student cannot be eligible for the BCRMTA Vancouver Branch Scholarship for two consecutive years.
bullet A student cannot be eligible for Junior, Intermediate or Senior scholarship in two consecutive years.
bullet All decisions of the adjudicators are final.

30.       To qualify for the BCRMTA Vancouver Branch Award, the student must:

bulletbe studying with a member of BCRMTA in Vancouver Branch
bullet willing to represent the Vancouver Branch to compete in the Provincial Piano Competition that is held every two years.
bulletfollow the guidelines as stated from section 29.

EMAIL ENQUIRIES

31.       All festival enquires must be made by the teacher by email.  Students and parents should direct all enquires to their individual teachers who should then make the enquiries to the appropriate festival committee member. 

32.       Please EMAIL appropriate Guild Committee member listed in Committee for any specific information you need.  All enquiries will be answered daily.

 

TEACHER'S ADVERTISEMENT

33.       Teachers participating in the Festival will have their name listed in the program.  For those who wish to advertise their studio may send a pdf or word file to the chairperson.

PROGRAMS

34.       Program fee for 2009:               $  5.00 each

35.       Order ONE program per family (required) and ONE per teacher (required), and make sure that the PROGRAM FEE has been added to the entry fees in your cheque.  It is the teacher’s responsibility to see that students receive their programs. 

36.       Programs will be available on October 30, 2009, Friday after 9:00am at the location that you have chosen in the Master Accounting Sheet.  Vancouver location: 1058 W.42nd Ave., Vancouver, B.C., Burnaby location 3896 Cambridge Street.  There will be a box outside the front door for pick-up. No phone calls to the residences, please.

HONOUR RECITAL

37.       Only those who qualify for an award or trophy will be selected to perform at the Honour Recital.  Teachers will be contacted on or after November 28, 2009.  Programs of the Recital will be posted on the website at www.bcrmta.org/spgfestival after December 3, 2009.

38.       The Honour Recital will be held on December 6, 2009, Sunday at Shadbolt Centre for the Arts (6450 Deer Lake Avenue, Burnaby, B.C.). Trophy and award recipients must arrive 30 minutes earlier to sign out for trophies and awards.

            Times:                          1:00-2:30pm;  3:00-4:30pm;  5:00-6:30pm

            Admission Fees:           $ 5.00 for each non-performing students, parents, friends, family members and teachers.

            Please note admission is free for all participating teachers.

 

COMPLAINTS AND PROTESTS

 

39.       All complaints and protests MUST be made to the Festival Chair IN WRITING during the Festival, accompanied by a fee of $30.00.  Any complaints or protests made by telephone will not be considered.  All fees will be returned in full should the protest be sustained.  Decisions made by the Guild Committee will be final.

 

 

TROPHIES

40.       All trophies will be awarded at the Honour Recital.  Students receiving trophies should sign a Trophy Release Form with the Trophy Co-ordinator before the Honour Recital.

41.       All trophies must be returned before October 1, 2009 to: 

            Deborah Choit’s residence:  1058 W. 42nd Avenue, Vancouver       OR

            Daisy Chu's residence: 528 West 28th Avenue, Vancouver 

42.       $100.00 will be charged for each trophy that is returned after the deadline. 

43.       Donations for scholarships are always welcome.  Please contact the Festival chair to give your donation. 

44.       The complete list of trophies and scholarships will be available on the website www.bcrmta.org/spgfestival  starting September 2009.

OTHERS 

45.       Teachers who have students interested in volunteering in the festival should refer to the Students Volunteer Program

46.       The Guild Committee reserves the right to make a final decision on any questions, irregularities, protest, etc. which may arise.  All rules and regulations mentioned from 1-45 will be strictly adhered.
